Frederick and Catherine Garychuk (Goryszczuk) immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine in 1928 with the promise of a new life.
They were granted title to a piece of property near portage la prairie like most new immigrants did. Grandpa and his brother would take a horse cart from portage that would get them close to the property where they set up a cabin. They would stay for days as they worked the land for firewood, berries, vegetables and native plants and medicines.
Frederick and Catherine had two sons, William and Murray.
In 1954 the river that surrounded the land was diverted. This split the land into two pieces creating an semi open ox box lake on the east side of the river. William was granted the east parcel and Murray granted the west parcel. The west parcel now belongs to Murray's sons Frederick and Stephen. The east parcel now belongs to Gregg (me).
This property has remained virtually untouched for decades and our goal is to keep it that way.
