In 1954 the river that surrounded the original property was diverted to make way for the Trans Canada highway. This split the property into two pieces creating an oxbow lake on the east side of the river. Flood mitigation infrastructure implemented along the Assiniboine River as part of the Portage diversion resulted in the oxbow lake being surrounded by a dike.
The natural topography of the newly formed river, oxbow lake and surrounding dike has allowed the lake to naturally flood when the river was high and lower when the high water subsided.
This property has remained virtually untouched for decades resulting in a environmentally unique property that encompasses several of the terrestrial ecosystems that make up it's prairie environment.
The semi open Oxbow lake covers approximately 24 acres.
The Forest area covers approximately 46 acres.
The Prairie grass lands cover approximately 6 acres.
The Marshlands that boarder the Oxbow lake cover approximately 1-2 acres.
The Riparian forest lands that surround the Oxbow lake and adjacent river zone are approximately 8200 ft. in length.
The Riverbank on the western boundary is approximately 2100 feet in length.
The Assiniboine River runs along the western boundary of the property.
The River Island is a located adjacent to the property in the middle of the Assiniboine river. It has an area of approximately 1.4 acres and a perimeter length of 1260 ft. The are several smaller size ox box islands.
This property, which is truly unique, is now under our stewardship.
